The Queen Of The Tearling by Erika Johansen

Princess Kelsea Raleigh was raised in the forest by her foster parents in order to protect her from the danger of being the soul heir to her mother's throne, and when she comes of age she is escorted back to claim her kingdom, on her journy the meet with many dangers and when she returns home what she discovers isn't the perfectly run country she was led to believe it was, The Tearling is filled with violence and pain and the threat of war with neighbouring countries and Kelsea's first act as Queen may just make that war a reality.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for well written, mature "princess books" from Princess Accademy (Shannon Hale) and Palace of Mirrors (Margaret Peterson Haddix) as a kid, to The Selection (Kiera Cass) and The Jewel (Amy Ewing) as a teen. I've always considered them good "fluff" books when i need an easy read and i think that's what drove me to read The Queen Of the Tearling so soon after it came out, regaurdless of how expensive a new release usually is.

That being said, this wasnt the simple "princess book" I was expecting yet I was definitly not disapointed. Although the main character is royalty this isnt a typical "princess book" that little girls would read, Its mature, and dark, and intese! I've even seen it compared to series like Game of Thrones (A Song Of Ice And Fire by Gorge RR Martin). This book is filled with danger and darkness and dirt, but also light and magic and romance. I absolutley recomend it to anyone interested in fantasey books and i personally can't wait for the second book! (for mature readers)
